Details

Made of legendary H-1 steel, making this knife impervious to rust, pitting, and salt.

The Pacific Salt is a synthesis of light weight, full-bore cutting performance, and 100% rustproof reliability. Its Trademark Round Hole, high-strength back lock mechanism, and reversible tip-up clip provide completely ambidextrous operation, while the Volcano Grip™ texture of the FRN handle ensures a secure grip in even the harshest conditions.

A big myth in the knife world is that out there somewhere is a knife that seriously cuts but cannot rust. Knives claiming these super powers are usually made with steels that are unable to hold a cutting edge for any measurable amount of time. Finally a steel foundry in Japan called Myodo Foundry makes this myth a reality with the introduction of a new steel called H-1. Spyderco uses H-1 on its new C91 Pacific Salt model.

Features:
  • Hollow Ground H-1 Steel Blade
  • 14mm Spyderco Round Hole
  • Molded Volcano Grip™ FRN Handles
  • David Boye Dent
  • Lanyard Hole
  • Reversible Metal Clip
It's blade is similar in shape and size to Spyderco's best-selling Endura model but with a slightly more rounded tip. All internal steel parts are treated as well, making them impervious to rust, pitting and, of course, salt. Those challenged by cleaning and maintaining their knives will find the Pacific Salt stays rust-free even if put away wet. The blade's hole is enlarged to 14mm for easier opening/closing with gloved, wet or cold hands. Textured in a checkerboard pattern, the FRN handle has a grippy texture and is fitted with a reversible metal pocket clip which positions for right-handers and lefties. The addition of a lanyard hole offers a backup method of attachment (thong or lanyard cord) for use around water where once dropped, a knife is often lost or elusively hard to retrieve.

H-1 Steel

H-1® steel is an extremely unique blade material that is completely rustproof. It is the heart of Spyderco’s Salt Series™—a family of knives ideally suited to hard use in and around the water, humidity, even persperation.

Conventional steels are produced by adding carbon to iron. This process changes the molecular matrix of the metal, enabling it to be altered through a variety of heat-based processes to produce hard, extremely durable things like knife blades. Unfortunately, carbon based steels also have a significant flaw: they are vulnerable to rust.

Rust occurs when the carbon in steel reacts with chloride. To avoid this, H-1 uses 0.10% nitrogen instead of carbon to give the material its steel-like qualities. Nitrogen does not react with chloride, making H-1 blades completely impervious to rust, even when submerged in salt water for extended periods of time.

H-1 is also unique because it is an austenitic steel. Traditional martensitic steels use a heat treating process to harden and temper them to be serviceable knife blades. H-1, however, “work hardens” through the mechanical processes of shaping and grinding the steel. The areas “worked” the most—like the bevels and cutting edges—become the hardest. The areas worked less remain softer and tougher. The end result is a blade with differential hardness that provides an exceptional balance of strength, flexibility and cutting performance—just like a coveted Japanese clay-tempered sword.

To ensure unfailing reliability in even the harshest environments, all handle and internal components of Spyderco’s Salt knives are also manufactured from 100% corrosion-proof materials and come with ti
